RHF offers courses and other resources to help our church community steward their personal finances in such a way that puts God first, and that brings glory to Him as our provider. FPU is one of those course. Watch the video above to get a glimpse inside FPU and read some thoughts from people in our community that have taken the course before…

FPU Covers It All…

“We got married in June of 2011. Since finances are one of the top subjects married couples argue about, we decided to attend the first available FPU course that fit into our schedules. We both thought we knew a fair amount about managing money and living off of a budget…until we went through the FPU course. When we calculated how much collective debt we had it was about $75K (most of this being student loans). The FPU course disproved our theory that we had a good handle on money management and completely changed our paradigm on financial prudence. We are on track to be debt free within 15 months of graduating from the FPU course and we now have a solid game-plan in place for using the tips and tools we learned for a lifetime.

I might add we accomplished our financial goal without sacrificing ‘fun.’ We have taken two extravagant vacations to Costa Rica and the Caribbean while living within our budget. FPU is relevant and applicable for couples and even singles of all shapes, sizes and incomes. From debt repayment to managing a monthly budget and everything in-between, FPU covers it all.”

I’m Feeling Free!

After listening to Dave for a few months I saw RH offered FPU. My friend and I joined immediately. At this point I had no health insurance, just bought a $22,000 car and was in debt $15,000 in credit cards. I was tired of being a “slave to the lender.” I own a dog walking business… and was working too hard to not know where my money was going.

…I was working too hard to not know where my money was going.

Throughout FPU my friend and I got really close and constantly had Budget Committee Meetings about what to spend or not to spend our money on. With her support and my table group I was able to get health insurance, pay off my car in 8 months and settle with 2 credit cards. I have one to go, but with God’s support and direction I will pay that off next month. I’m feeling free! I promised myself I’d be debt free before I get married and God is laying the groundwork for that path. Blessed and highly recommended to everyone!.

Debt Free!

My husband and I are now ” Debt Free!” We took the 1st 13-week course of Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University offered by ROCKHARBOR in the Spring of 2010. During that time Financial Peace University was one of the last things I wanted to do. I was in the middle of my Masters program, we had just gotten engaged so I was also planning a DIY budget wedding in 7 months, volunteering 10-20 hours a week, and trying to hold a part-time job. At that time I literally told Rob if you add one more thing to my plate I’m going to explode and he just couldn’t stop talking about this class. With the encouragement of my future husband and future Father-in-Law who offered to pay for the class, I signed us up for Financial Peace University.

It was the best thing I could of ever added to my plate. Baby step 1 was completed by the first few weeks of the class and then it was onto the debt snowball. Baby step 2 looked like an overwhelming and impossible task with everything that was going on in our life at that time. With gazelle like intensity we tackled the first debt quickly which was a Credit Card my husband had from college. Then we had our wedding which was paid in full and to my surprise I got a lot of deals by saying I will pay in cash. As a newly married couple we continued our debt snowball by paying off my husband’s car and then his student loan. Then it came down to our last and largest debt which was my student loan. To continue the momentum we had created we made the tough decision to downside to a small 1 bed 1 bath apartment and by doing so we were able to pay off my student loan in only 6 months. Looking at the whole picture we paid off about $50,000 of debt in a year and a half, with having only one income for the first year while I was finishing school.

The ideas about finances presented to us in the class were nothing we hadn’t heard before, but the class made achieving financial freedom a priority.  It encouraged us to get rid of the debt we had and stopped us from creating any new debt. Financial Peace University gave us an easy to follow plan and more importantly the motivation to follow the plan. I’m the saver and my husband is the spender. So it got us on the same page, gave us a middle ground, and put limits on his spending (hahaha). It made us see what was important and the difference between needs and wants. It gave us a goal and held us both accountable. Because of FPU we were able to start our lives together on the right path financially.

Since completing the course we have become fans of Dave Ramsey listening to his podcasts and radio show. We have also given our FPU DVD set to other couples. We would recommend this program to anyone as it feels so great to not have debt weighing you down. Good luck to everyone who signs up! We hope it changes the way you view money and the possibilities for your financial future.
